TH-Inside States of Mind Catalog

I recently received the catalog for last years TH-Inside States of Mind exhibition. My photographs along with six other talented American photographers ( See below) were  exhibited in Brussels in October and Copenhagen in December. Here is some info about TH-Inside and the States of Mind exhibition:

TH INSIDE was developed out of Tommy Hilfiger’s desire to support and exhibit up and coming young American photographers throughout Europe. Since its inception in 2005 TH INSIDE has grown in visibility, and is well regarded by professionals within the international photographic industry.

Since its inception in 2005, TH INSIDE has been presented in Tommy Hilfiger Europe’s art exhibition space located adjacent to its freestanding store at no. 2/A Piazza Oberdan in Milan. Tommy Hilfiger launched the first exhibition, Beyond the Portrait, Young American Photography, with the participation of some of the most talented and emerging artists of today, including Alec Soth and Jona Frank.

The second exhibition, Think Twice, Young American Photography, determined the strength of TH INSIDE as a European benchmark for the diffusion of American photographic culture, thanks to the works of great artists such as Kevin Cooley and Dan Torop.

In April 2007, TH INSIDE returned to the Milanese art scene with its third exhibition NOISE, inspired by the concept of the perception of sound. The title of the show is an invitation to not only view the photographs, but to experience the sounds that live within them. For the first time since the project’s inception, TH INSIDE was shown in Berlin, outside of its home city of Milan.

The inspiration behind the ‘States of Mind’ exhibition is to examine existing representations of iconic America, which is achieved through the visual expressions of seven talented, young photographers. Their interpretations of American iconography are presented through the juxtaposition of images in their work.

The photographers: Dustin Aksland, Dylan Chatain, Tim Davis, Melanie Enzig, Gus Powell, Jonathan Quinn and Christina Seeley have all been exclusively selected by curator Elena Bordignon, an expert in photographic art and talent scout for young artists.. ‘States of Mind’ will be launched in Brussels at the end of October and moves on to Copenhagen in December.

FJORD- Meet Waradise

Meet Waradise is an evolving venue that plays host to creative endeavors.  Tonight brings Fjord, an online photo collective which will display pictures by 66 photographers (Nicola Kast and Corrie Vierregger being friends of us) not on a wall, but on tables.  Far out.

Meet Waradise – Fjord
17 Orchard Street, NY
Wednesday, November 19th

Meet Waradise – Fjord is a one-night exhibition in which the general expectations of a photography exhibition will be broken and the viewer will be able to directly interact with the photographs.  This exhibition features the work of 66 photographers from the Fjord collective.  The photographs will be displayed in an un-mounted, un-bound fashion in order to promote direct interaction between the viewers and the work.

Exhibiting photographers are:

Fjord is a project that showcases the photography of young, up-and-coming photographers. The drastic shift in the way work is being presented today has become especially noticeable in the more technologically adept generation. Fjord’s goal is to bring together a collection of notable photographers from the Internet and showcase their work in physical form. This transition from Internet to physicality will allow a different audience to experience the work thus bringing emerging artists into the public’s view.

TH-Inside States of Mind Copenhagen

Here is a short clip of the exhibition space in Copenhagen. Unfortunately, I was unable to make it out to there, so this is all I got to see. Looks like it was a good time.

Crooked Smiles, Steady Voices and a Trunk Full of Cash

Crooked Smiles, Steady Voices and a Trunk Full of Cash

Set in a fantastical used car lot that gives “used” a whole new meaning, this installation explores American car culture, suburban sprawl, rising gas prices, consumerism, and the role of the salesperson in our society. A wooden and paper mache car is in the lot for sale “as is”, flags and undies hang over head while car dealership ads blast from the TV. Portraits of proud Americans standing by their cars and photos of this country’s vast landscape mix with drawings of cowboys and paintings of cars whose owners have found new uses for them such as planters and homes.

Video, drawing, painting, photography, printmaking and sculpture will be featured by this diverse group of artists who capture aspects of the American experience with humor, nostalgia, and criticism.

Under the Western Freeway

Meat Market Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of photographs by Dustin Aksland, entitled Under the Western Freeway.

As a teenager, photographer Dustin Aksland spent summers driving through California’s Central Valley for his father’s delivery business. Gazing at the region’s social landscape through box-van windows sparked a fascination with the hypocrisies of American life that form the basis of his current practice. Today, these thoughts take form in the images selected for Under the Western Freeway, a collection of photographs taken alone during road trips through the West. For this series, the artist, armed with a camera and an eye for the the sublime beauty found in the incongruities of American society, captures images that seem to suggest narratives of a somewhat Steinbeckian nature: a hauntingly beautiful California landscape riddled with loneliness and plagued by class struggle.

Opening: Friday, April 4, 2008 6-8:30pm Meat Market Gallery is located at 1636 17th Street NW, Washington, DC 20009 P: 202.328.6328 E: info@meatmarketgallery.com W: meatmarketgallery.com Hours of Operation: Wednesday-Saturday 12-6pm, Sunday 12-3pm
